More than 1,000 flights in the US have been canceled due to bad weather

More than 1,000 flights have been canceled in the United States, according to flight tracking site FlightAware, as severe winter weather threatens holiday travel.

Until early Thursday morning, 1,116 flights had been canceled throughout the country.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport leads the cancellations, followed by Denver International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport. Cancellations at those airports could have a broader impact, as they are busy hubs where travelers often change planes to reach other destinations.

Forecasters are forecasting a “bomb cyclone,” and the National Weather Service says more than 100 million people are under winter watches and wind chill advisories—that’s about a third of the US population.

Temperatures in Denver are forecast to plummet to 10 degrees below zero by dawn Thursday. Chicago could see near-blizzard conditions with snow starting at noon Thursday and continuing through Friday morning.

Many airlines have issued travel relaxations due to bad weather and travelers should check that their flights are still scheduled to take off before leaving for the airport. Experts warn travelers to arrive at the airport early to avoid the crowds.
